That’s old news

When I read the paper I like the news. The Free Press has news that been on TV the day before the paper comes out, so all the news is old. But your paper is a-OK in my book. Keep up the good work.

Victim of your language

In “Stressed (and) out” (Nov. 11), Kathryn Casa writes: “In addition, the stigma attached to mental illness in civilian society is amplified in the military.”

As a society, we have discriminated against mental illnesses, plural, for so long that we have become inured to our prejudices, their presence in our language. The allegation of a “stigma” is simply one of those prejudices. That which we have taught ourselves to fear we declare carries a “stigma” — that it itself is to blame. We, of course, are free of fault.
