Hearing to focus on future of broadband service Vermont
BURLINGTON — Rep. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, will be hosting a public hearing on the future of broadband service in Vermont given Verizon’s move to sell off much of its assets in the state.
The event will take place from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 10 at Burlington High School.
Residents, consumer groups, small business owners, state regulators, public officials and faith community leaders will discuss how state legislators and regulators should respond to Verizon's abandonment of its "low-value" landline customers.
Organizers also hope to answer these questions:
- How can labor, small businesses and consumers fight rural telecom red-lining and achieve hi-speed internet access for all?
- How can we protect telecom jobs, service quality, and regional economic development that depend on broadband connections?
The event is also sponsored by Vermont State Labor Council AFL-CIO, Vermont Workers Center - Burlington Labor Coalition For A Livable City, CWA Local 1400, IBEW Local 2326 and other community, consumer, business and labor organizations.
