Vermont campaign finance law heads to U.S. Supreme Court

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s landmark and controversial 1997 campaign finance reform law, which has been bouncing around the federal court system, is now heading to the U.S. Supreme Court.
A lawyer representing the Vermont Republican Party, the Vermont Right to Life Committee and 18 candidates told the Vermont Guardian that he will file a formal appeal with the Supreme Court before a May 11 deadline.
“[My clients] believe that the First Amendment protects speech and there is nothing more central to that than the ability of candidates to raise and spend money on their own speech,” said attorney James Bopp.
