BURLINGTON — In a result that even surprised the winner and his stalwart supporters, Progressive Bob Kiss was elected the new mayor of the state’s largest city.
In a campaign criticized as being too low-key and devoid of feisty jabs between opponents, Democrat Hinda Miller, a state senator and businesswoman, was seen as the frontrunner after winning a hotly contested primary in January.
Kiss becomes the first U.S. mayor to be elected via instant runoff voting (IRV). Also a state representative, he said he is not sure if he will step down from the Legislature as result of winning. He takes office in early April.
